Introducing: The Waterfront Times

Hey everyone, Dan Milleson here. You're receiving this email as a part of an 1,100-person community. You've been to a show at Waterfront Hall, you've signed up for our Running or Cycling clubs, or we've met somewhere along the way.

If you'd like to unsubscribe there is a button at the bottom of this email, but I hope you stick around, as this weekly correspondence (every Tuesday morning) is going to be your one-stop source of all things Waterfront Hall.

You will soon receive benefits - such as discounted show tickets, merch discounts, drink vouchers, contests and more. We're still trying to figure all of that out. Mostly, the focus will be community and awareness about the cool things that are taking place in our building, our area, and the wider world.

As you scroll down, you'll notice our upcoming live music, happenings, pop-up shops. There will be links to buy tickets, merch. You can even start booking your stay in our 2nd floor loft or begin planning your event.

Then you'll see the Running Club Update - we've developed a regular running community of around 30 members, with about 125 people on an email list. This newsletter will be the running club's new vessel for updates. And we are still considering putting together a cycling club and how that best works with our friends from Bike Wheeling.

Ian Gulley's column is next. He's our GM and heart and soul. He'll be musing on all things wine, beer. He'll write about our staff, projects, and our efforts to make Waterfront Hall better for all of you.

I'll be writing to you as a friend who wants to share ideas, inspiration, philosophy, and more.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I hope you'll come along for our high adventure in bringing us all a little closer.

Note: All of the running club and future cycling club emails will now come from this correspondence.

FROM IAN AT THE BAR

Memorial Day is right around the corner and that always gets me excited for barbecues, beers, & the Ogden Wellness Weekend.

Since moving back home five years ago, I have been impressed with how this race has developed into a full weekend of events centered around wellness in the community. I grew up running in the 5k and standing in awe at the speed of the 20k runners coming down the road to the finish line.

After putting on our first beer mile several weeks ago, I have a newfound level of respect for anyone who puts on a race that covers more than one city street, let alone a series of races over several days.

I hope you will join Dan and I, along with several members of our WFH running club by signing up for one of the awesome races they have planned this upcoming weekend. You can sign up here: https://www.ogdenwellnessweekend.com/

Good luck to everyone who will be walking, running, biking, and obstacle coursing! Please stop in and see us on Saturday after the races. We will be open at 11am along with our friends at Avenue Eats and The Woodfired Pizza Co.

FROM DAN

During the wild rush to open Waterfront Hall and then educating myself on how to operate it these past 12 months, I've had little time to reflect. But last week, I rewatched a video about our project from January 2023. We were seven months away from opening and I had been trying to lay low, to avoid adding more pressure. It was very intense time for me.

I kept having a recurring nightmare. I was in a downtown that wasn't quite Wheeling, inside of a brick building that wasn't quite Waterfront Hall, leading a group of people around that I didn't quite recognize.

Every night inside this dream, I would try to explain the project to the faceless group, but I couldn't get them to understand what I was doing. I couldn't get any language across that they understood. They didn't care and they weren't interested. It was wildly frustrating, and it lead to a feeling of panic/general concern. I'd then wake up and carry this with me throughout the day about my real project. This was happening 3-4 nights each week.

Finally I called up Amy from Essington Creative, and we made this:

video preview

I stopped having the dream shortly after we published the video. It had allowed me to describe and show people inside the project on my own terms. And we now have great record of what the building looked like before it was completed.

Thank you to everyone who has bought a meal, a cocktail, had an event, come to a show, or supported us in some way. You helped a dream become a reality and turned a recurring nightmare into one of the best things that has ever happened to me.

See you next week!
