RUNNING CLUB UPDATE
From Matt "Riff" Riffle

This Sunday the running world had its eyes set on the Chicago Marathon, one of the six World Major Marathons.

The fast and flat course through downtown Chicago attracts some of the strongest fields in the world and for the third consecutive year we saw a major record fall.

In 2022 Emily Sisson set a new Women’s American Marathon record with a time of 2 hours 18 minutes and 29 seconds. I actually ran in that race myself, and if you consider running a measly 17 minutes behind someone then I had a front row seat to Sisson’s historic day.

In 2023 Kenya’s Kelvin Kiptum challenged the elusive 2 hour mark by setting a new World Record of 2 hours and 35 seconds.

This year’s record is arguably the most impressive. Kenya’s Ruth Chepngetich challenged what we thought was possible at the distance by clocking a new World Record of 2 hours 9 minutes and 56 seconds. Chepngetich became the first woman to break the 2 hour 10 minute barrier in the marathon and crushed the world record of 2:11:53 set by Ethiopian Tigst Assefa at the 2023 Berlin Marathon. Only ten men ran faster than Chepngetich as she averaged 4 minutes and 57 seconds per mile for the 26.2 mile race.

Had she joined us for our trash run that pace would have been fast enough to clean up all of Wheeling in ten minutes. She was clearly too busy training to join us that day or answer any of my emails, but now that her race has been run I would like to offer Ruth free admission to our Support Small Business 5k on November 30th. You however must sign up and compete for second place by clicking this link.

From Ian at the Bar

I have worked at many bars and they've all had regulars. But I've never opened a bar and been able to see the progression of someone coming in for the very first time and then blossoming into becoming what we call a regular.

Whether you're a member of our Waterfront Running Club who likes to stop by every Wednesday for a run and a (free) pint or if you're someone that enjoys a glass of Michter's Bourbon after a day of work, we love our regulars and wouldn't be here without your commitment to what we are doing here at Waterfront Hall. My plan over the next several months is to feature one of our regulars in the WF Times as an ode to Times Leaders Athlete of the Week.

This may happen once a month or for several consecutive weeks, I haven't decided that yet. If you consider yourself one of our Norms (that’s a Cheers reference) and would like to be featured just wave me down at the bar, I’d love to chat!

Q&A WITH KATIE OHH

DM: Katie - you've done a lot of cool shit over the course of your life, but which did you like better: Performing as an actor and being on the soundtrack in Kathie Lee Gifford's film "The Way" or singing on stage with Keith Urban on your birthday this year at his concert? And why?

KTO:Wow! Both of these opportunities were so special to me in their own unique way….Kathie Lee took me to Israel to create and prepare for my role in “The Way” which was an experience unlike any other. But, the honor of performing alongside one of my musical idols, Keith Urban (& on my birthday, no less!), was just too incredible to not be at the top of my list! Keith has been one of my all-time favorites since I discovered my love for singing and country music in the early 2000s. For over 20 years, I’ve listened to every song he’s released…and even recreated several of the hits with my band in our early years around the Ohio Valley (the OG fans might remember my affinity for “Stupid Boy” on the acoustic guitar around ‘07/08). Keith has long-been an inspiration to me and my musical journey, and the experience of being in his creative circle for a night was a truly surreal experience — and certainly the best birthday yet!

DM: What is your best memory from winning NBC's "The Winner Is" hosted by Nick Lachey?

KTO: In many ways, “The Winner Is” feels like a lifetime ago, but I have some great memories from my time filming in Los Angeles. The entire process from casting to negotiations, licensing, rehearsals and filming was so fascinating! After filming of the final episode at Universal Studios, the entire crew had a wrap-party backstage. A few members of my family and friends who’d been in the audience were able to join me for the festivities — Nick Lachey and his wife Vanessa were there too! We celebrated, then were escorted by security into the adjacent Universal Studios theme park for after-hours rides on the rollercoasters! It was a night full of incredible memories, but I especially remember how friendly and down-to-earth Nick Lachey was. And, most importantly, he made sure to let me know he is an Ohio boy too! O - H !

DM: After being in Nashville this long, you know your way around. What are your favorite brunch, dinner, and drink spots?

KTO: I’ve turned into a bit of a “foodie” over the past several years, always searching out new and delicious restaurants around town. But sometimes, the best spots are the old faithfuls that I’ve been to hundreds of times! My favorite Nashville brunch is only available on Sunday’s at “Adele’s” on 11th Avenue. They offer an endless buffet of gourmet cuisine! And, this may seem strange, but the kale salad is unbelievable! It’s a delicious destination no matter your food preferences.

As for dinner — "Barcelona" in Edgehill Village is my go-to dinner spot. If you’re into tapas, charcuterie and wine, this is the spot! I love to go with a group a friends and order a variety of small plates to share. Choosing a favorite bar is a task, because I have several top contenders — Patterson House and Urban Cowboy Public House being a couple front-runners. But, it’s no surprise that my true favorite is just a short walk from my favorite restaurant! Also in Edgehill, “Old Glory” is an incredible craft cocktail bar housed in the former boiler room of the neighborhood’s historic White Way laundry factory, circa 1920. With their door anonymously marked by a golden triangle, it has three levels of seating, lots of plants (my favorite!), and a perfectly preserved smoke stack from it’s steam-cleaning days. It’s a great location to cozy up with a delicious cocktail and enjoy the vibes.

DM: What is coming up for you that has you excited?

KTO: I’m always in the studio working on fun and exciting new projects with various songwriters and artists, but I can’t always share details about what hasn’t yet been released. However, something I can talk about is another season with the Nashville Predators! This is my eighth season performing the National Anthem for the Preds and I am so excited to get back out on the ice. It’s such a great feeling to know that fans recognize me and are equally excited to hear my voice at the start of our home games at Bridgestone Arena in the heart of downtown Nashville.

DM: Do you have any hard-won advice or a meaningful lesson that you'd like to share with young musical/creative/ambitious people?

KTO: I believe the best lesson I’ve learned and can pass along to young creatives in any industry is: trust your intuition and don’t be afraid to bet on yourself! There are instances over the years where I know I’ve hesitated and let the cautious “little voice” in my head take over, only to miss out on or delay certain opportunities. Meanwhile, I knew in my heart that I should’ve just went for it. Now, that’s not to say that one should always throw caution to the wind, but it’s important to know your worth, trust your intuition, and be willing to bet on yourself! It’s a great feeling to look in the mirror and see a girl looking back at me who’s hard-working and given her absolute all. ---
