RUNNING CLUB UPDATE w/ PRESIDENT MATT RIFFLE

Every runner has been there - you’re in the middle of a peaceful run, minding your own business when you hear it: the ding of a stupid little bell or someone with a whiny voice calling out “passing on your left.”.......Cyclers…

As the President of the run club I have been asked time and time again, “Where is the Waterfront Hall Cycling Club?” How the hell would I know? I don’t associate with these people.

Runners and bikers are a rivalry as old as time, not one manufactured in my own mind like some of the therapists with cheaper rates in this town will have you believe. How someone can call an activity where you’re sitting the entire time a sport, I will never understand. Cycling is something that children do before they are permitted to drive.

Cyclists have the nerve to refer to our beautiful Wheeling Heritage Trail as the “bike trail” and are then simultaneously too fearful to use it during the winter months because it’s “too slippery” and is an “incredible risk to their physical health.” Please know that it’s not just that I don’t like cyclists, it’s also that I don’t respect them.

That said, I’ll admit it… The Waterfront Hall would be a perfect home base for the cyclists of our community. Because the runners of this city do not fear you, we are challenging you to come out of the darkness. If you are interested in a leadership role or becoming a member of the Waterfront Hall Cycling Club we ask you to reach out to us. I promise to keep the jokes about your padded shorts to a minimum.

If the Waterfront Hall Cycling Club could be even a fraction as successful as the run club (my actual estimation) then it has a lot of potential. You silly bike people deserve to have community too.

Let’s ride?

From Dan

We hosted Wheeling Fashion Week's Runway show over the weekend. The designers and models took over the lofts all day as changing rooms, the 3rd floor was our runway floor with 154 seats set up, and there was a red carpet outside.

The afterparty was held in our music venue.

Emily, Spencer, Lisa and their team allowed me to get up and say a few words. What I want to convey in these situations and what I ultimately convey is often different, but here's what I wrote down:

We're sitting in a room right now that three years ago was full of decades-old wooden inventory racks, with offcuts of countertops, spare cabinets, PVC pipe, and all manner of other widgets. All of this was organized for use within a kitchen and bath supply store operation.

Tonight, 154 people are here to watch a sold out fashion show.
When Emily Rouse approached me about her idea, in her mind, it was all a vision. And as we experience this show tonight it will become an antique of her mind - a series of images in her head brought into physical reality where we all get to experience it.
Two ideas: one, of this warehouse becoming a space for everyone and two, for fashion in Wheeling to be lifted higher, have now crossed paths and are now moving through you and calling you to create your own vision.
If inspiration happens to ripple through you this evening, please capture it and write it down or hang onto it. Of course, we all know that voice inside your head will begin to immediately tell you why you can't do this, why it doesn't make any sense - and that's when the real work begins.
Tonight, I encourage you to step out of that fear, step into inspiration, see yourself as a part of a community of ideas, see yourself as part of a noble experiment.
